Named Scholarships

The cost of a college education continues to rise. With the current challenging economic times, students need scholarship support now more than ever. Your generosity will make a world of difference to the next generation of Christian leaders who wish to attend WLC. Donations to general scholarship support benefit a broad range of students and are distributed where the need is greatest.

Some donors choose to establish an annual named scholarship or an endowed named scholarship for WLC students. If this is of interest to you, please contact one of our staff members or call Donor Services at 414.443.8823.

Currently, there are 76 annual named scholarships and 105 endowed named scholarships actively funded at WLC.

Creating a Named Scholarship:

  • When scholarships are created, donors can specify the name of the scholarship, and may choose to honor or memorialize family members, friends, professors, or mentors.
  • The donors can reflect their passions and interests by indicating what type of student should receive the scholarship award. For example, the scholarship can be designated for a student majoring in a particular field of study, such as nursing or business. However, many donors allow the financial aid director to distribute the money to students with the greatest need. It's the donor's choice!
  • Donors have the option to fund an annual or an endowed scholarship.
  • Other family members or friends may contribute to the named scholarship. They should specify the name of the scholarship when making their gift.
  • Matching gifts also may be directed to the scholarship, if permitted by the organization making the gift match.
  • A Scholarship Description and a Memorandum of Understanding will be prepared and placed on file to provide the criteria for the scholarship awards.  Copies of these documents will be provided to the scholarship donors.

Annual Named Scholarships:

  • Donors can create an annual named scholarship at WLC by making a yearly gift totaling $1,000 or more for that purpose.
  • The annual scholarship will continue to be awarded each year as long as the scholarship fund balance is at least $1,000 at the time the awards are made.

Endowed Named Scholarships:

  • An endowed scholarship can be started at any time with a gift of $25,000 or more, or a commitment to donate $25,000 or more over a period of time.
  • An endowed scholarship is permanent and will provide a scholarship award annually, forever, if it is funded at the $25,000 level or more.
  • With a gift of $25,000 or more, the donor will become a member of the WLC Ella Post Legacy Society because the scholarship qualifies as an endowed or long-term gift.
  • The principal in the endowed scholarship fund is preserved. The investment earnings are used for the scholarship award at the rate of four percent of the principal. Any investment income above the four percent is reinvested in the endowment fund.
  • The endowed scholarship fund balance will grow over time by way of reinvestment and additional contributions, and also by funding through an estate gift. As the scholarship grows, so will the financial support for students.
